WWDC25 starts with Keynote and Platform State of the Union
New version numbering, new UI, some interesting Apple Intelligence updates
Apple kicks off WWDC25 with Keynote and Platform State of the Union.
Version numbers
All platforms and Xcode now get version 26.
Liquid Glass
New user interface design is applied across all Apple platforms. New UI actively uses glass effects heavily influenced by visionOS design language.
iOS
New Apple Intelligence features include Live Translation, Visual Intelligence for screenshots, more Genmoji generation tools, Shortcuts support for Apple Intelligence, Wallet order tracking using messages and emails.
Phone app now could help users to wait on hold without actively listening to the music with Hold Assist, Call Screening could pre-screen unknown numbers before alerting the user. Messages app allows filtering out unknown numbers, creating polls, adding chat backgrounds.
CarPlay gets updated design, non-intrusive incoming call indicator, tapback message reactions and iPhone widgets and Live Activities.
More updates are done for Apple Music, Wallet app, new Games app, AirPods audio quality and many others.
watchOS
New Workout Buddy will add personal touch for workouts done using Fitness app, more workout settings are now available for better tailored experience.
Smart Stack now uses more sensor data for better predictions. Live Translations work in Messages app. New Notes app allows reading and adding notes on the fly.
Newer Apple Watch models could use ‘wrist flick’ gesture to hide the notification without marking it as read.
Control Center allows custom actions to be added.
tvOS
tvOS gets same design updates, ability to pick user on device wake up, karaoke mode improvements,
macOS Tahoe
macOS Tahoe brings Live Activities to Mac, Phone app now allows to initiate phone calls through connected iPhone, Spotlight gets access to shortcuts, actions and more, Reminders could get Apple Intelligence categorization and help creating reminders based on content.
Games app, improvements in Game Porting Toolkit, Metal 4 and other improvements should be useful to simplify macOS game development.
Journal app comes to macOS, Notes app gets Markdown support, and more other changes.
macOS Tahoe is the final macOS release to be available for Intel-based Macs.
visionOS
Spatial widgets come to visionOS, window positions are now preserved even after device restart, new capabilities to share spatial experience for people in the same room as well as those who are connected on FaceTime, Personas are significantly improved in visual quality.
Developers could use Spatial Scenes to make 2D photo spatial, video playback adds support for popular 180º and 360º videos, PlayStation VR2 Sense controllers and Logitech Muse are now natively supported.
Enterprise APIs also expand capabilities for developers, eye and hand data could be stored on iPhone for simplified Vision Pro sharing. Look to scroll allows for simpler content navigation, users could unlock their iPhone by looking at it, phone calls could be answered on Vision Pro, app icons now could be combined in folders.
iPadOS
On top of iOS updates, iPadOS adds new window resizing and buttons similar to macOS and a menu bar, Files app also gets macOS-related improvements, Preview app comes to iPad too along with Journal app.
Background Tasks API now allows long running task to continue while app is in background with visual indication of the progress.
Xcode
ChatGPT and other models could be used in Xcode for code generation, error fixes, etc. Apple allows adding models from other vendors and locally-deployed models too. ChatGPT queries could be limited by the type of the account.
Coding Tools provide support for typical development tasks.
Icon Composer
New app allows build layered icons for Apple platforms and check the behavior on different environments.
Foundation Models Framework
Developers will be able to use Apple’s Foundation models (on device and Private Cloud Compute variants) in their apps using custom prompts with plain text responses and with @Generable
types.
Swift 6.2
Swift updates are focused on performance, concurrency and interoperability with C++, Java, and JavaScript. Swift now officially supports WebAssembly.
Containerization Framework
Open-source Containerization Framework allows to create, manage and Linux containers on Mac.œ
Beta versions
Developers can install beta versions of operating systems and Xcode starting today.
